"I haven't felt this free in a long time," shouted a student while sailing on Mission Bay during our latest Agape Sail Day. "This feeling of control and freedom is brand new," the new sailor shared, "Pushing the tiller this way and pulling it that way and pulling this rope AND watching for other boats AND feeling the wind... it's a lot and I'm so here. Right here. It's amazing!"
Sailing with students offers a unique blend of adventure, teamwork, and spiritual reflection. As students navigate the water together—adjusting sails, reading the wind, and steering the boat—they learn not only practical skills but also the value of trust and collaboration. These shared experiences build strong community bonds, foster resilience, and create space for meaningful conversations. Stepping from the beach onto a catamaran, away from the distractions of campus life, opens the door to deeper personal and group reflection, encouraging students to think about their purpose, their faith, and the beauty of life beyond the classroom.
Spending time outside of campus is essential, especially enjoying God’s creativity of creation. Creation speaks of God's power, order, and creativity, and engaging with it helps students reconnect with a deeper sense of peace and perspective. In a culture where many young adults are overwhelmed by screens, schedules, and stress, stepping outside to experience the natural world can renew their minds and hearts. Sailing becomes more than a recreational activity—it becomes a form of worship and a way to encounter God in the rhythm of wind, water, and sky.
"When are we doing this again?"
Whenever you'd like.
