Tabling for New Student Orientations is a long and storied tradition on any campus.  This is a time for student resources to connect with incoming students and their parents during a lunch break amid a day of tours and information.  Agape continues to offer support with the Roman Catholic and Jewish organizations on campus.  We sit under the banner of "Interfaith Support" and we introduce students to each other in an atmosphere of common mission.  Recently, at SDSU, I heard, “Episcopalians, You’re My People!” from across the plaza.  Looking up I saw a bright-eyed student bounding over to our tent.  Raised in The Church, she saw our banner and was so happy to know that her faith could continue and grow during her time at State.  Seeing a familiar face, in this case The Episcopal Shield, meant the world to her.

Another day, a wide-eyed father approached the tent sharing, "We're so glad to see the rainbow heart," in an especially strong voice (as so others could hear clearly) before sharing his relief to find a faith community for his student. Raised in the ELCA, his student looks forward to expanding their faith while at State. Our ministry is special to so many in so many ways and these personal connections remain at the top of our list.

There’s a unique and deeply comforting joy in seeing a familiar face, especially after time apart or during moments of uncertainty. It brings with it an immediate sense of belonging, a silent reminder that you're not alone in the world. Recognition sparks warmth—memories flood in, laughter feels easier, and conversation flows naturally. In a sea of strangers or a hectic day, that one familiar face becomes a quiet anchor, grounding you in shared history and mutual understanding. It's a small, powerful moment that can brighten your mood and make the world feel a little more like home.
