Hosting a mocktail bar at the annual Polly Bond Awards, in St. Paul's Cathedral, on April 16, offered campus ministry students a meaningful, visible way to embody our unique brand of hospitality in action. Rather than simply attending, students became contributors—welcoming guests, sparking conversation, and creating a warm, inclusive environment that reflected the spirit of the church. A thoughtfully prepared mocktail bar signaled care for all attendees, including those who did not drink alcohol, and aligned with a broader commitment to accessibility and belonging. In the context of the Episcopal Communicators Conference, where storytelling and connection were central, this presence communicated values without needing a formal platform.
Just as importantly, the experience formed the students themselves. Planning, preparing, and hosting the mocktail bar required collaboration, creativity, and attentiveness to others—skills that translated directly into ministry and leadership. It gave students a chance to practice relational engagement in a real-world setting, building confidence as they interacted with leaders and professionals across the church. In a gathering focused on communication, their work became a living example of what it meant to communicate welcome, intentionality, and joy through simple, shared moments.
