May I please pet your dog?

There is something almost magical about a little fluffy dog when you are a college student far from home. You can be carrying a semester’s worth of assignments, wondering about your future, missing your family, and feeling a little untethered—and then suddenly, there is a warm, curly bundle of fur leaning against your leg. A dog asks nothing complicated of you. No résumé, grades, major, or five-year plan. Just sit down. Scratch behind my ears. Stay for a while. In that simple invitation is a little taste of home: comfort without explanation, affection without conditions, and the reminder that sometimes the best thing we can do is pause and simply be present.

Perhaps that is also part of what campus ministry can offer. Like the unexpected joy of a little dog, campus ministry creates a place where students can come as they are, homesick, hopeful, uncertain, joyful, exhausted, and discover that they are genuinely welcomed and loved. For students who may have wondered whether there is a place for all of who they are, an affirming faith community can be especially meaningful: a place where questions are welcomed, identities are honored, differences are celebrated, and no one has to leave an important part of themselves at the door. In the midst of a busy campus, it can become a small sanctuary where students can breathe, share a meal, laugh with friends, ask honest questions, and wonder together where God is present in their lives. It is a spiritual home—not a replacement for the people and places we miss, but a reminder that God's love travels with us. Sometimes we encounter that love through prayer or worship, sometimes through a deep conversation, and sometimes, wonderfully, through a little fluffy dog reminding us that grace can look a lot like joy curled up beside us on the grass.
