It was a genuine joy to spend time with The Rev. Beth Scriven, whose warmth and attentiveness were evident from the moment she arrived. As someone new to Bishop Susan’s staff, Beth brings both fresh perspective and a deep sense of vocation to her role, and that spirit was clear in every conversation. Even with the fancy title of Canon to the Ordinary for Leadership Development, her curiosity about our campus ministry at SDSU, paired with her thoughtful listening, created a sense of connection that felt both immediate and meaningful. For many of our LGBTQ students, there was a particular sense of ease and belonging in her presence—especially as she arrived wearing a t-shirt that read, “This Queer Priest Loves You.” That simple, visible witness spoke volumes, creating space for students to relax, be themselves, and feel genuinely seen.
On a beautifully bright San Diego day, her visit felt like a gift—an opportunity not only to share the life of our community, but also to glimpse the collaborative leadership she is already fostering across the diocese. We were especially glad to share one of our favorite traditions—our “Rest and Free Pizza”—which offered a simple but joyful window into the rhythms of care and hospitality that shape our ministry. We are grateful to have met Beth and for her commitment to being present with students, hearing their stories, and investing in their formation. Her visit was a reminder that leadership grounded in relationship and care has the power to strengthen the whole church.
