Why We’re Building

Executive Director and Campus Pastor

Years into our process of Building Sustainable Campus Ministry, it’s important to me to share why we began this journey in the first place.

Discerning a call to create systemic change to improve student access to affordable housing while also strengthening the long-term sustainability of campus ministry, Agape San Diego is developing plans to replace the beloved, small, aging house with a much expanded new campus ministry center, including housing for up to 50 student residents in a community setting, plus staff space and gathering spaces for up to 150 people. This process will replace our beloved (and very old) facility with more space for a growing community, create accessible gathering spaces with a warm welcome for students, donors, and others including dedicated quiet spaces for prayer, work, study, and focused gatherings, provide affordable housing through communal living spaces for up to 50 students or transitional leaders in formation, connect the Agape community to nature through green spaces, patio spaces, and spaces for communal service, retreat, and events, and expand sustainable operations with income-generating spaces to subsidize ministry.

Rooted in our core values, Agape San Diego commits to being a community that supports and welcomes those interested in uplifting each other. We believe that our diversity makes us a stronger and healthier community and therefore celebrate and welcome people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expressions, or relationship status, and including people of all physical abilities, neurodivergence, race, culture, or creed, and those with different beliefs. Our welcome overcomes documentation status, addiction, physical or mental health, imprisonment, socio-economic circumstances, or anything that too often divides us. Our commitment to welcome and care extends to the Earth. We commit to creating a sustainable community that actively works to the healing and flourishing of our planet. Come as you are. Know that you are valued as a complete and integral part of our community.

Radical Welcome

Create accessible gathering spaces with a warm welcome for folks from all backgrounds, including gender identity, ability, immigration status, neuro-cognitive identity, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status.

Growth in Community

Connect the Agape community to one another, to nature, and to God through green spaces, patios, a coffeehouse, and gathering places for service, spiritual practice, and community organizing.

Justice & Mercy

Expand sustainable operations with income-generating spaces to subsidize ministry, while providing affordable housing for students.

Rooted in Faith

Provide affordable housing through communal living spaces for up to fifty students or transitional leaders in formation

It’s so easy to get bogged down in detail upon detail as we get ever closer to this new reality which is why it’s important to me to remember why we began this journey.

Thank you for your continued support and generosity.
