Recently we represented Agape San Diego at the Synod Assembly for the Pacifica Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).  This three-day conference is the annual responsibility of regional ELCA congregations and is the best family reunion of the year.  Gathering as people of faith for the work of The Church is holy work.  That said, decision-making conferences are often marked by both blessings and struggles. On the one hand, they offer an invaluable opportunity for diverse minds to come together, share perspectives, and work collaboratively toward a common goal. These gatherings can spark innovative solutions, clarify complex issues, and deepen mutual understanding among participants. However, they are not without their difficulties. Navigating conflicting opinions, managing group dynamics, and ensuring that every voice is heard can be challenging. The weight of responsibility, especially when decisions have far-reaching consequences, can also be emotionally and mentally taxing for those involved.

In contrast, family reunions bring a different kind of blessing—one rooted in emotional connection and shared history. These gatherings are joyful occasions that allow relatives, often scattered by time and distance, to reconnect, reminisce, and strengthen their bonds. They provide a space for laughter, storytelling, and the passing down of traditions from one generation to the next. Yet, even amidst the celebration, reunions can also highlight unresolved family tensions or the pain of absent loved ones. Still, the overarching joy of reunion tends to overshadow these challenges, offering a reminder of the enduring strength and comfort of family ties.

Deacon Jen worked tirelessly for Agape and her fellow deacons last weekend and reflects, “Being in front of a large (or even small) group of people, as the center of attention, is really hard for me.  As a deacon, I prefer to lead from the back.  I would rather gather people together, find out what makes them tick and then encourage them to move toward service.  But at the Synod Assembly, that's  not the case.  I was front and center and uncomfortable.  But ultimately it led to positive outcomes.  This was a reminder for me that I can be uncomfortable and accomplish things simultaneously.”

Broader church gatherings, like Synod Assembly, are both a conference and a family reunion and we love them for it.  Sharing the good news of Agape is a privilege as we remember how Jesus invites us to come to him, all who are heavy-laden, he’ll provide rest, we gather with like-minded Christians to learn how better to serve in our mission fields.  After three days and, for Pastor Darin: two long nights, the Synod Assembly wrapped with full hearts and broadened minds.
