Taking a tip from our 18th Century ancestors, we hosted an Election Party on Election Day and I’m glad that we did. Adding a Democracy Cake to our regular pizza and sparkling water offering, we added another pleasant surprise on a festive day. The voting line wove around The Price Center, dance music, from the campus DJ club, wafted across the grass from Library Walk, a local restaurant gave away smoothies, Associated Students gave away shirts all afternoon, and and and. We added to the true celebration that was Election Day.
That was Tuesday Afternoon.
Juxtapose with San Diego State on Wednesday.
Deflated. Somber. Many were stunned. Few Celebrated. God was present. Students reacted to the outcome, sharing big feelings about a future that might not come. A finance major celebrated the bump in the DOW. We felt those feelings together, hearing each other, and moving through loss.
This is Campus Ministry. This is a ministry of presence. Moving through the blessings and struggles of life and this presence is possible because of the generosity and vision of generations before and the generosity and vision of others today. I’m grateful for yours throughout the years.
Living into Jesus’ call to love and welcome all, we don’t ask for anyone’s religious ID or insist on the secret Episco-Handshake. Week after week we sit with people and share the love of Jesus, one slice of pizza at a time. Through a meal, rest, and dignity, we listen with each other as we explore the latest Jordan Peele project or the sacred mysteries of the universe and often both. We talk about past trauma caused by organized religion. We share moments or hours that have nothing to do with the doctrine of the Episcopal Church and have everything to do with the love of God in Christ Jesus.
