The fall retreat at Camp Stevens offered our Agape San Diego SDSU/UC San Diego students a beautiful opportunity to step away from the busyness of campus life and reconnect with themselves, one another, and the restorative presence of nature. For some, the retreat was a familiar return to a beloved place; for others, it was a courageous step into something new. Raven, a graduating senior using the GI Bill, shared, “I was nervous for this new experience but I am so glad I went to Camp Stevens and I’m grateful for everyone who encouraged me and made it happen.” Her words remind us how meaningful it can be to extend an invitation, offer encouragement, and create spaces where students feel supported enough to try something new. Sometimes, the first step toward belonging is simply being welcomed through the door.

For returning students, Camp Stevens offered a familiar sense of peace, while for newcomers, it provided an opportunity to discover the warmth of the Agape community. Luca, a third-year student and summer camp staff member, reflected, “I loved being back in Camp Stevens’ constant welcome and peace. Being surrounded by such wonderful people and beautiful nature was a perfect reset.” Annaka Penner-Smith, a transfer student, echoed this spirit of belonging, sharing how “the agape group had been so warm and welcoming and supportive.” She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to experience camp, enjoy the beautiful weather, participate in unique experiences, and share in fellowship. Together, these reflections speak to the heart of our ministry: creating a welcoming, affirming community where students can rest, build relationships, explore their faith, and experience the love of God through meaningful connections with others and the natural world.

As we return to our studies, responsibilities, and the demands of campus life, we carry the gifts of this retreat with us: renewed energy, deeper friendships, shared laughter, and the reminder that we do not have to navigate life alone. Retreats like this embody our call to be creative, welcoming, and affirming disciples of Jesus, making room for every student to be seen, valued, and loved. As Mario, a graduate student, put it, “You’ll know what you were missing after you experienced an Agape Student Retreat.” His invitation captures the spirit of Agape: there is something powerful about stepping away from the ordinary and discovering a community where you can simply belong. We are grateful to everyone who made this retreat possible and to each student who showed up, took a chance, and continue to make Camp Stevens a place of connection, renewal, and grace.
